Whether on the road, in the air or on the water: companies, research institutes and universities in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region are shaping the mobility of tomorrow.
Mobility has a long tradition in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region, but it also has a bright future.
As early as 1835, the ‘Adler’ – Germany’s first railway – ran between Nuremberg and Fürth. Today, the mobility and automotive sectors are among the most important economic sectors in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Around 100,000 people work here for suppliers to the automotive industry.
However, the mobility of tomorrow will not simply be a further development of today’s systems. E-mobility, digitalisation and sustainability are transforming the way we get around and presenting businesses, research and society with new challenges. At the same time, economic and geopolitical uncertainties are creating additional pressure for change.
The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is actively shaping this transformation. With innovative technologies, strong companies, universities and research institutions, solutions for the mobility of the future are being developed here – from the region, for the region and beyond. Whether on the road, in the air or on the water: technologies for cars, lorries, aeroplanes, trains and ships are being developed here.

Suppliers of tomorrow: Innovative. Digital. Sustainable.
Under the motto “Suppliers of tomorrow: Innovative. Digital. Sustainable.”, the Zukunftswerkstatt Automotive Metropolregion Nürnberg invites you to Ansbach on 30 September 2026. Together, we will look to the future of the industry. After all, innovation, digitalisation and sustainability are already shaping tomorrow’s competitiveness today – and can be most effectively shaped through dialogue and cooperation.
Combining mobility and energy within your own organisation
A RegioStrat series of events organised by the ENERGIEregion Nürnberg and the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region
The aim of this series of events is to provide small and medium-sized enterprises with information on generating their own energy and using it for electric mobility. Practical examples and field trips to pioneering organisations bring the concept to life. The next field trip will take place on 24 September 2026, and the series will conclude on 29 September 2026 with a networking event at bayernhafen in Nuremberg.
Inductive charging whilst driving
Fraunhofer IISB and FAU are testing inductive power transfer on a test track near Amberg
Inductive charging means that electric cars can even be powered whilst driving. What still sounds like something from the future is already being researched: Fraunhofer IISB and FAU are working on the technology at the E|Road Centre in Hallstadt near Bamberg. Inductive charging is currently being tested on a test section of the A6 motorway near Amberg.

Baumüller and Fraunhofer IISB are helping to shape the future of shipping
Baumüller Anlagen-Systemtechnik GmbH & Co. KG develops electric and hybrid marine propulsion systems and has already electrified more than 80 ships and boats. These innovative propulsion systems result in a lower environmental impact compared with conventional diesel engines. The Fraunhofer IISB is also contributing to the future of shipping: using innovative medium-voltage electronics, it is developing technologies for efficient electric propulsion systems.

Cryogenic converters for the future of flight
Fraunhofer IISB has developed a cryogenic converter that operates at temperatures of -196 degrees
What does extreme cold have to do with the future of flight? At its Erlangen site, the Fraunhofer IISB is developing extremely lightweight and high-performance electronics that make electric aircraft propulsion possible in the first place, even under extreme conditions such as a temperature of -196 degrees.

Fraunhofer IIS has developed an automated X-ray analysis system that examines batteries non-destructively
The mobility of the future takes into account the life cycle of vehicles and second-life applications. The Fraunhofer IIS in Fürth provides an example of this technology from the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. The AIR system, developed by Fraunhofer IIS, enables batteries to be examined non-destructively, making it easier to assess whether they can be used for second-life applications.
