Fraunhofer IISB demonstrates how energy can be used efficiently and sustainably through innovative software solutions

intEMT® is a modular and flexible software toolbox for smart energy management, designed for the modelling, simulation and optimisation of complex energy systems. The five core libraries can be used individually or in combination, enabling bespoke solutions ranging from plant-level modelling to comprehensive smart energy management.

ENERGIERegion Nürnberg and Klimapakt2030plus present their series of events

With over 80 stakeholders, the ENERGIERegion Nürnberg represents the key sectors of energy and the environment in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and is driving forward structural change in the interests of climate protection and resource conservation. The “Klimapakt2030plus” project also aims to accelerate the energy transition in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. To this end, the participants intend to significantly advance the transformation of the electricity and heating supply and the energy-efficient refurbishment of buildings.

Green energy for thousands of kilometres of railway track

Baumüller is upgrading hydroelectric generators for the Austrian Federal Railways to ensure they remain operational for a further 25 years

The future of energy does not always start from scratch. Sometimes it is already embedded in existing infrastructure. Baumüller, for example, has modernised three 80-tonne generators so that they can continue to supply sustainable electricity for another 25 years. The hydroelectric generators supply electricity from renewable energy sources to the Austrian Federal Railways; they are powered, for example, by water flowing from reservoirs in the Hohe Tauern mountains.

NürnbergMesse: A model for sustainable trade fair operations using solar energy

As soon as the sun rises in Nuremberg, NürnbergMesse’s photovoltaic modules on the roofs of six exhibition halls and one multi-storey car park begin to collect solar energy. By mid-2026, 21,000 modules will have been installed, generating a total output of around 9 MWp. NürnbergMesse is thus a pioneer in sustainable trade fair operations and uses the latest technologies, such as drones, 5G networks and AI, to maintain the solar panels.

As part of the SMART.H2 project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, research is being carried out at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg into the ageing and regeneration of H₂ fuel cells for lorries.

The sensible use of carbon dioxide

Carbon4bac is investigating the use of the greenhouse gas CO₂ as a raw material for bacterial bioprocesses

The Carbon4bac project at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg is investigating whether it is possible to use carbon dioxide as a substrate for bioprocesses involving bacteria. In this way, climate-damaging CO₂ can be utilised as a free raw material and thus also sequestered. This benefits industry, as a raw material is available free of charge without supply bottlenecks, and it also benefits humanity as a whole, as the negative consequences of climate change can potentially be mitigated.
